Delta 8: How it’s made

Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol also called delta 8, d8, delta-8, delta-8-THC, or Δ8 THC is the new kid on the block, sort of. It’s actually the 4th most researched cannabinoid in the world but it has been largely suppressed in the United States. Research dates back to 1974, yet only very recently has it made its way to market. Delta-8-THC is making waves in the cannabis industry due to its legal status - it’s federally legal when derived from industrial hemp, thanks to the 2018 farm bill - and supposed medical potential - perhaps much of what can be accomplished with delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol could be accomplished with delta-8, with less of a psychotropic effect.

Delta 8 is found in many types of cannabis, but only in minute quantities. Most dried cannabis flowers contain well under 1% of delta-8. To truly get an effect and experience what delta 8 has to offer, it has to be extracted, either through isolation of the compound or by synthesizing it from other cannabinoids. In this article, we’ll be exploring the different ways delta-8 is made from plant to product. If you’d like to learn more about what Delta-8 is, check out this article.

Making the best Delta 8

We work with a vertically integrated operation, allowing us full control over all the means of production. Our process of making delta 8 begins with the soil. In dark, rich, pesticide-free soil, we grow beautiful, high-quality cannabis flowers, classified as industrial hemp with a delta-9-THC content of under 0.3%. We harvest, dry, cure, and trim our buds with pride, producing some of the finest smokable hemp flowers in the US. Our buds are rich in legal cannabinoids such as CBD, CBG, and CBN. You can purchase a select few of these through our website at bloom.delivery.

Once we have our hemp flower, there are a few different ways we can go about extracting, isolating, synthesizing, and refining delta-8 and creating wholesale delta 8 concentrates. We begin with the hemp flower, break it down and run it through a fractional distillation process. We use a thin film distillation and utilize variations in temperature and pressure in order to isolate delta-8-THC. Through this process, we are able to create delta 8 distillate typically containing over 80% delta-8. The distillate can then be further refined in order to create much higher concentrations of delta 8, over 99%.

Additionally, we are also utilizing isomerization processes, with much success, converting CBD and CBG into bulk delta-8-THC. We are continually refining our processes using specialized equipment in our state-of-the-art lab. All of our end product delta-8-THC extracts are additive & solvent-free, test under 0.3% delta-9-THC, and are as high of a % delta-8-THC as possible.
